The earliest hearing aids were made during the 1500s. These said devices were made from wood and were designed to appear like ears of animals that are known for good auditory perception. During the 1800s, hearing aids turned into consumer products.
Manufacturers of hearing aids then made trumpet hearing aids, although these items were only manufactured on a small scale. At the latter part of the 19th century, these hearing aids went into mass production. Their sizes also grew significantly. The earliest famous type of hearing aid cost around $400 and was a tabletop model. During that period only the rich were able to buy that model.
A typical hearing aid amplifies sounds particularly speech and voice, allowing a person to get a better understanding of what is being spoken to them. While hearing aids have transformed over the years, their concept remains practically the same. Hearing aids make use of basic principles to allow them to help the hearing impaired.
Today, a lot of various modern hearing aids like digital hearing aids are being preferred by consumers over the traditional hearing aids.
A hearing aid has these basic components are amplifier, microphone and receiver. The amplifier makes the sound transmitted from a microphone louder. The microphone on the other hand is the reception device capturing the sound waves. The receiver serves as a speaker, converting sound waves into electronic from its auditory form.
With the evolution of technology, manufacture of hearing aids has become more complicated and advanced. There are three types of hearing aids – convention
al, programmable, and the digital hearing aids.
The first type, conventional hearing aids, is the earliest type of hearing aids that were released for commercial consumption. While this type is not as superior in terms of technology, the conventions type of hearing aid is adjustable to fit the needs of the user. The user, for instance, can turn the volume according to his or her preference. The downside of this type is in case the person’s hearing level worsens or improves, the hearing aid must be returned to the manufacturer for certain adjustments. It can be very inconvenient for anyone using a conventional hearing aid.
The second type is the programmable hearing aid. Compared to the first type, this is more technologically advanced. This type of hearing aid has an adjustable circuit depending on the level of hearing of the user. Volume control is automatic, thus it is more convenient and easy to use for any patient.
The last type is the digital hearing aid which can suit any specific situation of the user. This is considered the most convenient and best type to use. Another kind of hearing aid is the disposable kind, which offers a cost effective way of helping hearing impaired in improving their hearing capability. However the downside is, this type of hearing aid is notorious for having a short shelf life.
